I recently posted a survey as to whether the 2010 Wilson Varsity Ice Hockey season a success. So far the response has been no. However, in my mind the season was somewhat of a success. Although the team finished with an overall record of 4-14 there was some good points throughout the season. The varsity team started the season with a whole new look due to ten seniors leaving from the 2009 varsity team, which suffered a loss in the quarterfinals of the CPIHL playoffs. As a result, the team consisted of young players and previous junior varsity players which had to learn the varsity system quickly. The team was comprised of five freshman and three sophomores which had limited varsity experience prior to the season. In my mind these players contributed greatly to the season. Erik Bowers was one freshman which produced tremendously and finished second on the team in points with 10 goals and 8 assists. Also, sophomore Austin Reaser who had only one season of varsity experience under his belt produced with 8 goals and 9 assists which put him third on the team in points. Therefore, the young talent more than exceeded the expectations of coaches and fans. Although the young talent produced goal tending did not. This has been a continuous problem for the varsity team over the past few years. Goalies Brandon Reaser and Morgan Lewis had both had two years of varsity experience prior to the 2010 season. Many believed this experience would lead to a better season between the pipes for the Wilson Varsity Ice Hockey team throughout the 2010 season. However, problems continued. Halfway through the season Reaser was pulled from the starting job and Lewis moved in as the started. The change did not fix much though. Goal tending was still poor and by the end of the season both Lewis and Reaser were playing every other game. With better goal tending the season could have been more of a success. Therefore, although the record was poor I believe the 2010 season was somewhat of a success because the young players on the team showed they can play which leads way to a bright future.
